The Benefits of Making Your Own Croutons
Making your own croutons at home is a great way to enjoy the crunchy texture and delicious flavor of homemade croutons without having to buy them from the store. Not only are homemade croutons healthier than store-bought ones, but they can also be made with either gluten-free bread or regular bread.
Get your children to help you with this recipe, they will love getting their hands dirty when mixing the seasoning. When I made these, my daughter had the whole bowl of them on their own.
Seasonings
Use this recipe as a base to create an endless combination of flavors, you can use any kind of herbs and spices of your choice. Use just simple seasoning such as salt and black pepper or go with Italian seasoning even add cheese to the croutons.
Stale Bread or Fresh Bread
The choice is yours, but here are two reasons you should use stale bread:
- Stale bread is a thirsty bread and will soak up the olive oil really well.
- You will get perfect little cubes as they will be less prone to tearing apart.
Preparing The Bread
If you are using fresh bread, gently tear it with your hands as it is delicate. If you are using stale bread you can use a knife to cut up the bread.
Size of the Homemade Gluten Free Croutons
While it’s ok to have imperfect cubes but when you are cutting the bread aim for about 1/2 inch cubes so that they are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
