Allergy Friendly Custard Toast Recipe – a viral TikTok recipe that is dairy free, egg free and gluten free!
Yes, I am a little late to this trend, it took me a while to work out how to make it dairy, gluten, and egg free but here we are – Allergy Friendly Custard Toast Recipe – a viral TikTok recipe from months ago.
An easy breakfast recipe that feels like you are having a dessert for breakfast. It takes less than 10 minutes to make it and is healthy too.
The recipe is a custard that you pour on bread, top it with your favorite toppings then bake in the air fryer.
Ingredient Substitutions for Allergy Friendly Custard Toast
The custard in the viral recipe only needs 3 ingredients: Greek yogurt, egg, and maple syrup, full of allergens as you can see. There is also the bread which is wheat. Here is how I substituted the ingredients.
Dairy Free Custard Toast
This recipe calls for Greek yogurt, for which you can use your favorite vegan yogurt substitute. Or you can be like me and forget to buy the yogurt so you substitute it with the next best thing. I used dairy free cream, the same amount as the yogurt and I think it still turned out pretty well.
Egg Free Custard
This post is in no way sponsored by Just Egg but that is what I used. The liquid Just Egg I thought was the right substitution for the egg. You can use your favorite egg substitute or even leave it out altogether but you will have to experiment with it, as I don’t know how it will turn out.
Gluten Free Allergy Friendly Custard Toast
I think this is the easiest substitution in this recipe, just use your favorite brand of gluten free bread you like.
You have to make a well in the toast by pressing the center of the toast lightly. Be careful when doing this with gluten free bread as it might break. I found it the hard way, so the second time, I just poured the custard over, I recommend pressing very very lightly if at all.
The gluten free bread also tends to break easily, so make sure there is just enough liquid on it so that it does not break. Also, put the slices in the air fryer before pouring the custard on top so you do not have to move the bread too much.
Maple Syrup Alternative
You can use honey instead of maple syrup or maybe even brown sugar. If you are using sugar, make sure to mix it into the liquid well before adding it to the bread. The amount of maple syrup used, I felt did not sweeten the toast enough, so add it according to your taste.
How to cook the Allergy Friendly Custard Toast
The first time I made this recipe I burnt the toast, so I would recommend keeping a check on it and only cooking it until the custard is no longer liquidy.
You can also bake them in the oven if you do not have an air fryer.
